| | What DPSP Professionals Do
The following bolded elements are the duties of a DSPS professional.
Each one is followed by an explanation of the duties more thoroughly.
Help set up class schedule for DSPS students
DSPS counselors create a student Educational Contract (SEC) and Educational Plan with the student, which outlines the specific instructional and educational goals of the student with a description of the objectives and activities needed to achieve these goals. Using the SEC and the Educational Plan the DSPS counselor assists the student with scheduling classes each semester. Registration assistance is considered an appropriate accommodation under the ADA.
Coordinate note taking services
DSPS is responsible for coordinating note taking services by either assigning an in-class aide or informing the instructor by letter that a volunteer note taker is needed. Note taker includes services for writing, note taking, and manual manipulation for classroom and related academic activities. Note taking is one of the many accommodations that can be authorized for students with verified disabilities.
Analyze verification of disability
The ultimate responsibility of verification lies with the DSPS coordinator. The verification, either from a DSPS professional or other qualified professional agency, should identify or describe the student’s disability and the educational limitations, which inhibit the educational process.
Verify students learning disabilities
A DSPS learning disability specialist may professionally certify if assessment documentation from a referring agency is deemed to meet the requirements in the California Community College Learning disability Eligibility Model. The learning disability specialist also may provide the assessment and verification of a learning disability.
Coordinate interpreter services
The Deaf Services Specialist in DSPS works with the Deaf and Hard of Hearing students to assess their communication needs and place appropriately skilled interpreters in the classroom.
Scan text books onto computer disc
DSPS is responsible for providing transcription services, including but not limited to, the provision of Braille and print materials.
Provides feedback to administrators on ADA requirements
DSPS review board policies; ascertain that student admissions and registration policies are free of barriers to participation; determine that policies and practices for reasonable accommodation for students have been reviewed for compliance; determine that student social, extra-curricular and health services are effective and accessible by disabled persons; ensure Financial Aid, EOP&S, and other programs have eligibility information which is accessible to disabled persons; ensure program information, schedules, and activities are effectively communicated to all program participants including those with visual and/or hearing impairments; provide programmatic access to all instructional programs; ensure faculty is informed on responsibility to provide reasonable accommodation as required by the ADA; ensure eligibility criteria does not screen out or tend to screen out an individual with a disability from fully and equally enjoying any service, program, or activity, unless such criteria can be shown to be necessary for the provision of the program or activity being offered; ensure programs are administered in the most integrated setting appropriate to the needs of qualified individuals with disabilities; etc…
Inform students of their rights and responsibilities
DSPS must provide documentation verifying that the student was notified of all policies dealing with the rights and responsibilities in receiving DSPS services.
